WYSA Spring Soccer Update (Covid-19)

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding during this time of uncertainty as we awaited updates from our governing bodies and facilities. The WYSA Board of Directors met last night to determine the best course of action for the spring season, being both realistic and optimistic.

Due to lack of available facilities and the projected peak of Covid-19 in Alaska with corresponding social restrictions, we will not hold the spring season as scheduled but will move forward with our summer season planning. We are disappointed as we had planned for a great spring season, but we will focus on the positive and put all of our efforts into an epic summer season!

Therefore, we will process current spring registrations in the following manner:
(Please do not reply to this email but follow instructions listed below per option)

1) As a default, all Spring Futsal 2020 registrations will be moved to Summer Outdoor 2020 registrations (unless we receive an email with alternative option listed below).

2) For players 2003-2011, all Summer Outdoor 2020 programming is scheduled in the evenings.
For players 2012-2016, there are also morning options this summer. As a default, we will move all players to evening programming. To opt for morning programming, please send email to with player birthyear and player name in the subject line with your preference described in the body of the email.

3) For players that are not able to participate in the Summer Outdoor 2020 season, you may opt for a credit that is valid for 12 months. It can be applied toward Fall Outdoor 2020, next Spring Futsal 2021, WYSA clinics, camps, or VR academy sessions. To claim your credit in lieu of summer registration, please send email to with player birthyear and player name in the subject line with your preference described in the body of the email.

4) This credit is transferable. Families may opt to use this credit for a sibling or another family member. To select this option, please send email to with the full name of the original player registration in the subject line with information regarding the player that will be utilizing the credit included in the body of the email. This option may require a phone call from a WYSA administrator to register the new player that will be receiving the credit, so please include a best contact #.

5) This credit may be used as a charitable donation. Families may donate the credit as a WYSA player scholarship to a family in need during this challenging time. To select this option, please send email to with the full name of the original player registration in the subject line with your donation option in the body of the email.

6) If none of the above listed options are feasible for your family, please email so that the WYSA Board of Directors may meet and consider your situation and respond appropriately.

We will be processing these registrations options this weekend and throughout next week. Please notifiy us by April 5, 2020 if you would prefer options #2-6.

We are so grateful for all of the families in our soccer community. We are very much looking forward to when we can resume our Alaskan lifestyle and all be together again!

March 17, 2020 Email Update (sent to all registered participants)

We just received the following notification from US Club Soccer, the national youth soccer entity that sanctions and insures the WYSA Spring Futsal Program.

"In recent days, numerous public health agencies - including the CDC, NIH and WHO - have issued strong advice to avoid person-to-person contact to the greatest extent possible. Gatherings of 10 or more people are now being discouraged.
Accordingly, US Club Soccer is joining with other youth members of the U.S. Soccer Federation (AYSO, SAY and USSSA) in immediately suspending all activities within our jurisdiction through April 12."

We appreciate your patience as WYSA/VR directors discuss the implications of this announcement and determine the best course of action for the spring futsal season. We will send an update as soon as a decision is made which will include all relevant details.

About Futsal

Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small sided soccer game that is played across the world and is officially recognized by both FIFA and UEFA.

Futsal earned the status of FIFA's official form of indoor soccer in the 1980s as it was recognized as a scaled down version of outdoor soccer played indoors. It is a 5 v 5 small-sided game played on a hard surfaced, basketball sized court with a smaller, low bounce ball. Futsal is played with touchline boundaries and without walls.

Futsal places a large emphasis on technical skill in high pressure situations which can be translated into the outdoor game. The sport is a great skill developer as it demands quick reflexes, fast thinking and pin-point passing.

Futsal is played in all the continents of the world by over 100 countries with 12 million players. Great soccer superstars such as Pele, Zico, Ronaldo, Messi, Kaka and Katia grew up playing the game and credit futsal with developing their skills.

Why Futsal?

The priority in Futsal is to motivate players in an environment that is conducive to learning. The more pleasure kids derive from their participation, the more they wish to play and practice on their own. While their instinct to play is natural, their affection and appreciation for soccer must be cultivated. Futsal is the foundation to such goals because it:

  • Allows players to frequently touch the ball.
  • Presents many opportunities to score goals and score goals often.
  • Encourages regaining possession of the ball as a productive, fun and rewarding part of the game (defending).
  • Maximizes active participation and minimizes inactivity and boredom.
  • Reflects the philosophy of player development expressed in state and national coaching schools.
  • Eliminates complicated rules such as off-sides that may hinder youngsters from "playing".
